For students looking to improve their drawing techniques, we recommend the book, The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, as an excellent reference.

An overview of admissions requirements and process

Greetings Prospective Students!

As a prospective student, feel free to check out our pages, but please direct specific questions about our program to your admissions representative at: General admissions -

You can earn your Bachelor’s degree in four years with our evening schedule or enroll in our accelerated day schedule and graduate even sooner – in just over 2 ½ years! We offer federal financial aid for those who qualify, some high school scholarships, and several options for tuition payment.

Ex’pression may accept general education credits transferred from accredited post-secondary institutions if certain conditions (as outlined in the college catalog) are met. Credit for any other courses may be granted on a course-by-course basis based on a transfer request made by the student prior to matriculation. All transfer units are subject to approval.

Enrollment Procedures and Admission Requirements

The Application Process

To apply for admission at Ex’pression applicants must complete the following requirements:

Application Form & Fee

You can request an application form from an Admissions Representative or you can apply online by clicking here. A $95 non-refundable application fee ($10 for veterans) must accompany your completed application form (please refer to the refund policy in our catalog for further details).

Personal Essay

A typed essay describing your reasons and motivation for applying to the degree program of your choice is required. The essay must be a minimum of two pages, double spaced; using 12 point Times New Roman font. This essay allows Ex’pression to gain an understanding of your interests and to learn more about you.

Evidence of Graduation from High School or Equivalent

Send one of the following:

  • an official sealed transcript from your high school showing evidence of graduation
  • a copy of your high school diploma
  • a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • a high school equivalency certificate such as the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE)

For home-schooled applicants: please submit documentation that outlines the curriculum studied. This may be in the form of course syllabi or a transcript from a recognized home-schooling agency. If documentation is not possible, GED or CHSPE scores must be submitted.

For students who have earned an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution recognized by the US Department of Education: in lieu of submitting any of the above documents you may submit a transcript from your college showing evidence of graduation.

All transcripts must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation of the original.

*For those wishing to apply for the Academic Competitiveness Grant, you must submit an official high school transcript showing evidence of graduation.

For students with prior college credit wishing to transfer credit: please refer to the Transfer of Credit Policy in our catalog.

Portfolio or Drawing Test - For those applying to the Animation and Visual Effects, Game Art & Design or Motion Graphic Design Programs only

Applicants to the Visual Arts Programs (Animation and Visual Effects, Game Art & Design and Motion Graphic Design) will be required to complete either an on-site drawing test, or submit 3 sketches* (studies) of your own hand holding an object of your choice. Sketches should be completed using simple materials (pencil and copy paper is fine).

Ex’pression understands that students have diverse artistic backgrounds, sketches and drawing tests are evaluated on an individual basis by a member of our Fine Arts Department.

*If you choose to submit sample sketches please mail the sketches to your admissions representative. These sketches will give Ex’pression an understanding of the maturity of observational skills in the areas of mass, proportion, and shading, all crucial skills needed to create art on a computer.

Consultation and Tour of the School

Meet with an admissions representative (more than one meeting may occur) and receive a tour of the school; completion of an admission questionnaire is requested at this time, but not required for admittance.

Entrance Interview and Test

Schedule a time with an admissions representative to participate in an entrance interview and take the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test. If you have earned a bachelor’s degree at an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the US Department of Education or if you have earned a degree at a foreign institution, recognized by the federal government of that nation, you may be exempt from taking the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test; please contact an admissions representative for further information.

Those applicants that have completed either the SAT or ACT exams may submit official test scores in lieu of completing the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test.

The entrance interview and a passing test score are required for admittance to the College.

Calculators are not permitted when taking the Wonderlic Basic Skills test.

If you require disability accommodations for the entrance test, accommodations must be requested within 48 hours prior to testing. Please notify your admissions representative who will direct you to our Disabilities Coordinator.

Acceptance to Ex’pression

A representative will notify you if you are accepted to Ex’pression. You must then complete the enrollment agreement and all required enrollment forms.

New Student Orientation

Participation in New Student Orientation is required. Students unable to attend orientation must notify the admissions department prior to the scheduled orientation date to make alternate arrangements.

International Students

There are special application requirements for international applicants. Please see the international student section for more information.
