Matthew Law, Motion Graphics Graduate Takes Charge in Elite Game Projects

“Expression College for Digital Arts taught me not only the tools I needed to know, but also how to teach myself tools I’d never seen before.”

Matthew Law, former Expression for College student, is now a Motion Graphics designer based in San Francisco, CA.  Since graduating from Expression College’s Motion Graphic Design program in Class 32, Law has gone on to work on a number of high profile jobs that anyone would envy.

Most notably Law worked on several projects related to Xbox 360’s Halo 3 (Halo3.com).  Halo 3 is the third game in the Halo Trilogy, giving gamers a thrilling conclusion to the war against Humanity.  For Halo 3: Iris, Law wore many different has.  He did initial concept modeling for the server, all of the 3D and post assembly on final environments and edited, effected and ultimately modeled a city for the content videos.  Law also worked on Halo 3: Believe, an experimental site that goes hand-in-hand with the “Believe” TV campaign.

“The ‘Believe’ site is easily my favorite project to date,” says Law.  “Not only did I learn a ton, but it was on Halo 3 – the country’s top game right now.”

On the “Believe” site, Law did scene assembly, including 3D motion tracking and texturing for sky replacement, initial color correction and all the motion tracking of the various clickable hotspots which were then integrated into Adobe Flash.  Check out the site Halo3.com/believe

The “Believe” site has been named both Site of the Month and Site of the Day at TheFWA.com.

“The biggest help has been the ‘jack of all trades’ approach I got at Expression College - everything from pre-production, to the shoot, to 3D and post work.  Learning all of that has really given me an edge in that it make me one of the few guys who can see a project from start to finish and know what’s happening the whole time,” says Law.

In addition to the fabulous Halo opportunities, Law has worked on a slew of other cool graphics projects, including the following:

Project Gotham Racing - This was part of a promotional website for the Xbox 360 launch title “Project Gotham Racing 3”.  Law was responsible for the editing and transition effects in the Style section, as well as the editing and smoke effects in the rich media ads that accompanied the site.  This site won a Silver Pencil at the 2006 One Show.

Nike Basketball - For this LeBron James promotional site that Nike ran in Asia, Law was given boards, an Adobe Photoshop doc, and 24 hours to come up with a video introduction!

Gears Of War - Emergenceday - Law did the editing and effects treatment for all four of the site videos and the intro security footage for the “Gears of War” micro-site.

“Expression College’s own environment was a tremendous help in preparing me for the tight deadlines in the motion graphics work environment,” said Law.  “If it weren’t for month long semesters and being able to work on top-of-the-line equipment 24 hours a day, I probably wouldn’t have been able to hack it after I started working. Knowing what a Red Bull tastes like at 4 in the morning builds character!”
