Ex’pression College for Digital Arts
Brandon hails from Long Beach, California. For as long as he can remember, he has had a passion for art and was constantly painting and drawing throughout high school. Over time, Brandon lost track of his creative side, but Ex’pression got him back on track.
Ex’pression was Brandon’s second college. He originally went to school at the University of Oregon for City Planning. After graduating, he worked both in the fields of journalism and media. In those roles, Brandon helped students find scholarships. He often aspired toward attaining the motivation and passion similar to the students he helped. Around the same time, he was also DJing on the side. He couldn’t afford to pay for professional fliers, so he made them on his own using Adobe Photoshop. Brandon enjoyed making promotional fliers so much that he decided to pursue graphic design as a career.
“
Brandon moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997 to join a creative network of friends. After researching several graphic design schools, he found his dream school, Ex’pression College. Following a visit to Ex’pression for the first time, he found himself blown away by the campus and facilities. He also felt the resurgence of creativity coming back to him. Brandon then took some money he had saved and, with family support, quit his job and was back in school within weeks. Ex’pression’s rolling schedule allowed him to start during the summer. “Going back to school to study Motion Graphics was one of the best decisions of my life and Ex’pression College definitely prepared me for the fast-paced real-world work environment.”
After Ex’pression, Brandon first interned and then was hired on full-time at the notable San Francisco design-based production company, Gunshop. Along with sending an email, Brandon physically walked to their shop and gave them his reel. “Gunshop was a very fast-paced environment and the work was challenging.” While he was there, he did everything from broadcast work for companies like MTV, VH1, NASCAR, and The Boys & Girls Club, to non-commercial spots for business-to-business, internal training videos, and event specific graphics. On those projects, Brandon had the chance to play a role in every aspect of production. He worked on storyboards, style frames, design, animatics, 2D animation, 3D work, video-editing, and technical aspects of delivering work to clients.
