KC Murphy

K.C. Murphy has contributed Environment Art and Technical Direction on a huge selection of award-winning, real-time games for Atari, Midway, Blue Shift, Ocean, Infogrammes, Sony, and LucasFilm over the course of 10 years. K.C. received her Bachelor’s Degree in Film at the University of Iowa, and uses that knowledge of moving storytelling to influence the art she produces.

“Creating the environments in video games allowed me to use my technical expertise in tandem with traditional artistic skills – designing, modeling, texturing, lighting, and animating environment assets, as well as optimizing them for a variety of real time engines.  As an Environment Artist, one deals with many facets of the creation and implementation of Art assets in a real-time game.  The constant shift and improvement in the tools artists can use to get better and better art in a real-time game makes it the fastest moving, and most inspirational melding of Art and Technology – and a very exciting process to be a part of!

Working with real-time engines is a very challenging and rewarding experience – especially as a team sport!  Finding creative and ingenious ways of creating, and then maintaining the integrity of beautiful art in a restrictive, 60 frames-per-second, real-time world gives any artist an amazing perspective on the field of 3D Computer Graphics.  In the end it’s all points and lines, so the artist that has the vision to make beautiful art as well as the technical knowledge to preserve it, will be met with great success in an extremely challenging, and ever-changing field.”
