Make Art that Moves

Making music come alive is the goal of the short form video class taken by advanced Motion Graphic Design students at Ex’pression College. This real world project is completed in only five weeks and action packed as students must collaborate with bands to develop a creative brief, pitch multiple ideas, storyboard then create animatics all before the actual production and shooting takes place. The production phase includes shooting video often on one of Ex’pressions’ two large green screens.

Post production includes editing, video encoding and delivery formats for broadcast. The project is concluded with the final addition of motion graphic design elements and special effects. The short form cinema class is among the most popular in the Motion Graphic Design program. Graduates from this program have gone on to work with Grammy Award-winning artists such as Coldplay and Kanye West.

For the Disastroid project students actually created the puppets for the piece. Band members actively participated in the shoot behind the scenes, playing the puppets wearing green suits as seen here in photos used for local print advertising.

This rather ambitious project was quite a challenge for students, they shot for five nights—loosing valuable sleep in favor of completing the project in time.
