Ex’pression College recently completed construction and installation of the new Vicon Motion Capture System, or Vicon MX, in the Emeryville campus.
The 400 square foot space provides a 20 feet by 20 feet capture space, and is equipped with 12 Vicon T40 cameras. These cameras are capable of shooting 2,000 frames per second in 2352 x 1728 pixels with 10 bit grayscale and 4 megapixel resolution.
Vicon has long been the industry standard for motion capture performance and Ex’pression is at the forefront teaching the same technology used to create films like “Iron Man” and “Transformers.” Tom Armbruster, Vicon Vice-President said this about the Ex’pression upgrade, “VICON’s motion capture technology has become ubiquitous in filmmaking, games and 3D animation. It’s great that educational institutions like Expression College for Digital Arts are investing in Hollywood-caliber technologies such as the VICON T40 system to provide their students with tools that mimic real-world production scenarios.”
Ex’pression graduates have reaped the benefits of learning motion capture performance as a part of the curriculum. Currently, over a dozen Ex’pression graduates are working in motion capture performance at Image Movers Digital in production on “A Christmas Carol”, directed by Robert Zemeckis and staring Jim Carrey set for release this holiday season.
