September 21, 1999 - State of California confers degree-granting status on Expression College for Digital Arts

Emeryville, Calif. - Students who attend Expression College for Digital Arts can now earn both Associate and Bachelor of Applied Science degrees.

The California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education notified the school of the change in status last week. Expression began its first classes in January, offering diplomas in Comprehensive Sound Arts, Comprehensive Digital Visual Media and in a Dual Media and Sound program.

In addition, because of the new status, students may now earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in each of the sound and visual studies. By combining the classes from both programs, and also adding credits from classes either taken at another institution or taken on-line while at Expression, a student may also now earn a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Visual Media and Sound Arts from Expression.

“This is a big deal for our students,” beamed Expression President Gary Platt. “They know from the first day they start here that what they are doing is very serious. We try to keep things fun but really, they work very hard and know they will have a great education by the time they’re done. This just makes it official.”

Expression calls its intensive style of education “total immersion.” Students attend classes an average of 45 hours a week - three hours a day in classroom studies and six more hours a day in hands-on laboratory instruction. The courses continue for 14 months, leading to what is now the Associate’s degree. Those who choose to can then continue for at least another 10 months in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.

Expression currently has 162 students enrolled in five classes that have begun so far this year on overlapping schedules.

When they have successfully completed their courses, Expression graduates will be ready to move into coveted positions in Hollywood special effects shops, professional sound studios, corporate media departments and a wide variety of multimedia jobs in sound, video, Internet and entertainment industries.
