Ex’pression College for Digital Arts
Brian Webb in Sound Arts is one easy-going and content student, who knows hes on the right path.
He was born in Fresno and moved to Alabama when he was 2. After growing up in Alabama and attending college there, he came to California with a Computer Science degree. He worked for 8 years with his Computer Science background for various companies such as Microsoft and Levi, mainly in network support, but wasnt happy with what he was doing. Moving around to different companies wasnt the answer, and Brians frustration and boredom continued to grow. He decided to check out other options.
Brian had been involved with music production on various levels for many years, and considered it as mere fun. When he was clear that staying in the computer networking industry wasnt what he wanted to continue doing, he started to seek other possibilities. While speaking to a counselor at Alameda College, the counselor suggested that before he went back to any other school that he might check out Expression College. Brian took a tour at Expression College and the rest is history.
After seeing the Sound Arts curriculum and campus, Brian was hooked. Since Brian had already been involved in music production, he was very excited about the Sound Arts program and ready to sign up. Little did he know that he could make a profession from his true passion.
Brian will graduate in January of 2008 from Expression and is already involved in some exciting sound projects. He continues to produce music for fun, and is involved in the front of house engineering for his church. An exciting upcoming project that he will be involved in at Expression College includes the music production for the Debarge brothers reunion album which is scheduled to record in 2007.
Some of Brians favorite instructors at Expression include: Jeremy Sherman, for his diverse attitudes and influence, as well as Dave Bell and Steve Orlando for their in-depth expertise with sound boards and ability to teach what they love and know. Brian states that both Dave and Steve not only bend over backwards to share their knowledge, but are excellent examples of professionals in the industry doing what they love, and being successful at it. Sound arts is all about the connections and who you know. The most challenging part of Expression for Brian is the midnight labs and keeping up with the homework and accelerated program expectations. His favorite class so far has been the Midi II class and Studio Maintenance was a bit hard to understand, but a necessary part of the puzzle and very important. In the accelerated program, sometimes it seemed that some classes should have had more time spent on them. Overall, Brian has been pleased with the sound arts program and is excited to be doing what hes always wanted to do.
He plans to stay in the bay area after graduation where he loves to live and hopes to work for Lucas Sound, DreamWorks or Pixar. When I asked Brian what he does outside of school for fun, he simply replied produce music.
