A typical day at Expression

“A day at Expression College? “

“I usually start my day by getting to class 5-10 minutes early so I can get my seat. As the minutes tick away, my group members trickle in and we talk about our movie and if there is anything else we can be doing, given the knowledge we’ve received, to make it better. I am in the Game Art and Design program but still in the initial core classes that all students take; as far as our movie goes, we have finished shooting and editing the video content, the next 5 weeks will be devoted to the sound aspect of the film. Class starts and for the next 2.5 to 3 hours we get an interesting and informative lecture on the day’s topic, of course half way through we get a 10-15 minute break while most students go outside to smoke or just get some fresh air.

After class we get a lunch that lasts between 30 minutes and an hour in which time a lot of people head to the cafeteria to talk with friends and get some food. There are, however, a number of student who either head home for their break or to one of the many places to eat in the area (my favorite is the Public Market, there are dozens of little ethnic places from Indian to Greek to Japanese to Mexican, always a good bet there). For those who stay in the cafeteria, there are a few arcade games to play where people choose to hone their skills in Street Fighter II or see if they can get a new high score on Dungeons and Dragons. Of course it’s not just video games, just a short walk away is the ping pong area where we often have small tournaments with our teacher and other classmates.

Once lunch wraps up, its another 3-4 hours of lab where we edit our movies adding transitions, looking through all our captured footage and matching up base audio as to where it should go in the film. Everyone has a point of view and something to add to the group dynamic so it becomes an interesting creation. After a long day of being in class, we head out to the world equipped with new knowledge and ideas to tinker with. The rest of the evening is spent trying to come up with ways to make our project better.

The days are long in hours but often times fly by and even after class is over, the gears are still turning about your project.”
